Dismal Swamp Canal in spring. The Great Dismal Swamp Canal is part of the Intracoastal Waterway. It is the oldest continuously operating canal in the United States, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also a National Civil Engineering Landmark. The historic canal was part of the Underground Railroad. Boaters following Americas Great Loop may enjoy this alternate route between Albemarle Sound and Norfolk.
