Description
Scottish wildcat, Felis silvestris, pauses on an old stump in autumn. This endangered species has few left in the wild, because they interbreed with domestic and feral cats. Scottish wildcats have a distinctive striped bushy tail.

Thank you Phyllis! I understand that one of the problems facing European Wildcats is that they tend to interbreed with domestic and feral cats. Numbers of un-hybridised Scottish Wildcats are critically low. So yes, I expect that if you live in the countryside in Scotland your nice little tabby cat could have a touch of Wildcat in him!

Louise, your images are all so wonderful, but, of course, I must comment on this fabulous Scottish, Wildcat! What a beauty he is, and I love that sweet, ferocious, little face! I wonder if they ever become pets. L/F!

Thanks Roselynne! The tail is a distinctive giveaway that the cat is a Scottish Wildcat, and not to the neighbour's tabby cat!
